WhatsApp marketing in Tanzania

In Tanzania, customers already talk to businesses on WhatsApp — to ask prices, order and complain. Marketing on WhatsApp works when it feels like that same conversation, not like an advert.

Four ways to use WhatsApp for sales

  • One-to-one messages: the strongest. A short, personal message to a business or customer who has a reason to hear from you.
  • Broadcast lists: one message to many saved contacts. Only people who saved your number receive it, so build the list from real customers.
  • Status: free reach to everyone who saved your number — new stock, a price, a before-and-after photo.
  • Catalogue: products with prices, so customers can ask about a specific item instead of “bei gani?”.

Write messages people answer

  1. Greet in the language they use — many local businesses answer faster in Swahili.
  2. Say one true thing about them (“I saw your shop on Google Maps has no website”).
  3. Say what you offer in one sentence, with a price if you can.
  4. End with one easy question.

“Habari! Nimeona duka lenu Kariakoo halina tovuti. Tunatengeneza tovuti ya bidhaa kwa TZS 250,000 ndani ya wiki moja. Ningependa kukutumia mfano?”

Follow up — once or twice

Most replies come after a reminder. Three or four days later, send two lines that add something new — a photo, a price, a short video — then stop. See how to follow up automatically.

Keep your number safe

  • Start slowly: a new number that suddenly sends hundreds of messages is likely to be restricted by WhatsApp.
  • Stop at once when someone says STOP, “acha” or asks you not to write again.
  • Don’t send the same text to everyone — personal messages get replies and fewer reports.
  • Use a number you own and keep the phone charged and online if you use WhatsApp Web tools.

Stay within the law

Tanzania’s Personal Data Protection Act, 2022 covers phone numbers and names. Contact people for a clear business reason, tell them who you are, and stop when they ask. See what the law means for your marketing.

Doing it with less work

KijaniHub’s WhatsApp automation finds businesses that need what you sell, writes a personal first message for each one from facts on their own pages, lets you approve the first messages, starts slowly, follows up once, stops on STOP, and answers replies only from what your knowledge base says.

Questions

Can I message people who never saved my number?

Yes, on a normal WhatsApp account you can start a chat with any number, but do it one by one, for a real business reason, and stop if they ask. Broadcast lists only reach people who saved your number.

How many WhatsApp messages can I send a day?

WhatsApp does not publish a fixed limit for normal accounts. Start with a few dozen personal messages a day on a new number and increase slowly if people reply and nobody reports you.
